Caves in Khasi Hills

The natural caves in the Khasi, Garo and Jaintia hills are of special attraction for the tourists. Some of them are the longest caves in the Indian Sub-continent. You can explore the Mawsmai cave from its main entrance that lies in the Mawsmai village.
The narrow opening of the cave gives way to fairly large halls with endless galleries connected to similar halls. The crystalline stalagmites and stalactites sparkle with the artificial lights while exploring its labyrinths. It is exciting as well as fascinating to explore the interiors waiting for the unknown in the step next.

The 4th longest cave in the Indian Subcontinent, Krem Mawmluh is 4503 meters in length. Situated about half a kilometer west of Cherrapunjee it is a spectacular cave with fiver river passages of considerable proportions.

Another of the caves in the Khasi hills is the 1003 meters long Krem Phyllut situated in Mawsmai village south of Cherrapunjee. The major section of the village consists of fossils while there are two stream ways and three entrances.

With a 20-meter deep pothole entrance, Krem Soh Shympi of Mawlong, East Khasi Hills is a large cave passage with numerous formations. It is 760 meters in length.

Mawsynram is located at a distance of 58 kms from Shillong.

Krem Dam with a length of 1297 meters is the largest sandstone cave in the Indian sub-continent. It has a very large entrance with a stream entering the cave and running down its main passage.

Caves in Jaintia Hills

While traveling in Jowai, a picturesque town situated on the Shillong highway surrounded by the Myntdu river you will be coming across many thrilling caves and caverns. These caves served as great hideouts for Jaintia Kings during war. There are numerous caves in villages of Nongtalang, Pdengshakap, Amlarem and Syndai.

Krem Um-Lawan, the cave of the Eocene age is one of the spectacular caves of Jaintia hills. With the upper passage of fossils and the lower active passage it has numerous waterfalls. It is presently the longest (6381m) and deepest (106.8m) cave in the Indian sub-continent.

Ka Krem Pubon Rupasor or The Rupasor Cave, Krem Kotsati, Krem Umshangktat, Krem Lashinng and Krem Sweep are the other well-known caves of the Jaintia hills, which are resplendent with stalactites and stalagmites, consisting of large halls, deep pools and beautiful river passages.

Caves in Garo Hills

The spectacle that engulfs you while trekking along the Garo hills is mesmerizing. With an abundance of wild life, flora and fauna it is a photographer’s as well as a naturalist’s delight to drink in the panoramic scenario. Two mountain ranges of Garo hills, the Arabella range and the Tura range has a passageway in between forming the great Balpakram Valley.

The third longest cave in the Indian sub-continent, Siju-Dobkhakol, 4772 meters is situated on the bank of the Simsang River just below the village of Siju. It contains some of the finest river passage to be found anywhere in the world. It is the most researched cave in India and is the home of tens of thousands of bats.

Tetengkol-Balwakol, Dobhakol Chibe Nala and Bok Bak Dobhakol are the other interesting caves of Garo hills.
