Tourism in North East India

The exotic land of North East India remains untapped of its natural wealth. Nestling among the snow capped Himalayan peaks it offers a breath taking view of the hilly terrains, the cascading waterfalls and the evergreen valleys. Trekking along the uphill terrains of the region provides you with a spectacular view of its flowing rivers, the rare ferns, its majestic monoliths, endangered birds, bamboo bushes material for splendid handicrafts, the cobalt blue sky and the chilling fresh air blowing through your hair. Once you come across such beauty you would be wondering if it is heaven, as some of the hilly tribals believe in life after death. Tourism in North East India is being promoted by the Government and people in search for serenity and a few days of tranquility often reach out for these destinations.

Encompassing all the major nine states, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, North East India extends an excellent touring avenue for those who love the adventures the mountains offer.

The North Indian States are connected to mainland India by the 22km wide Siliguri Corridor and is bounded by Bhutan, Tibet, China, Burma (Myanmar) and Bangladesh. While traveling to these exclusive places, PAP (Protected Area Permits) or RAP (Restricted Area Permits) is required except Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura. Visitors can easily avail these permits though it is difficult for an independent traveler to get it. It is always advisable to avail the services of local tour operators for permits.

The North East Indians are a mixture of the Aryan and Mongoloid origin. Most of the tribal racial origins can be traced to the Tibetans, Burmese, Thais and Laos. These people have very little common with the rest of India.

For quite sometime the seven states suffered from ethnic violence and internal unrest. Even today there are freedom movements from the Bodos of Assam and the Naga people though they fail to receive popular support. Tribal struggles between the Kukis and Nagas of Manipur and similar unrest in Tripura still exists. Border infiltration, particularly from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Nepal is rampant which is a threat to the ecological balance of these states which is a house to rare and endangered plant and animal species.
