Monuments of North East India

By North East India we refer to the seven states commonly known as the “Seven Sisters”. They are Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Before Independence this entire area was known as Assam Province. The region is also known as the land of seven sisters. The states are famous for their scenic beauty and have many other tourists attractions where one can witness the beauty of a poet’s dream.

Monuments in North East India

Monuments in Assam:

  • Batadrawa Satra and Shrine:

    It lies at a distance of14 kms from Nagaon town in Assam. Batadrawa is the birthplace of famous Vaishnav. The shrine is held in high veneration by the Vaishnavas.
  • Barpeta Satra and Kirtanghar:

    This famous Shrine and Kirtanghar attracts Vaishanavas from all over India. It was established by Madhadeva, the greatest disciple of Shankerdeva.
  • Kamakhya and Bhubaneswari Temple:

    This temple is on the top of the Nilachal hill some eight kms from Guwahati. This temple is dedicated to Shaktism and the different sculptures in the temple premises date back from eighth to seventeenth century.
  • Navagraha Temple:

    This temple is dedicated to the nine planets in the solar system. It is situated on Chitrachal hill in Guwahati and is a center of astrological and astronomical research.
  • Vasistha Ashram:

    This Ashram is 16 kms from Guwahati and is believed to have been established by the great Sage Vasistha. It is located on the Sandhyachal hills.
  • Hayagriva-Madhab Temple:

    Lying at about 20 Kms. from Guwahati, this is the meeting place of Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism. It is an important pilgrimage for Hindus and Buddhists both.
  • Poa Mecca:

    At Hajo itself there is this Poa Mecca. It is a pilgrimage for Muslims. It is believed that by offering prayers here faithful gains one fourth spiritual enlightenment of what could be gained at Mecca.

    Monuments in Arunachal Pradesh:

  • Ita Fort-

    This majestic fort was built in the 14th century, which gives the city its name.
  • Buddha Vihar-

    This one is a major landmark of the city is the Buddha Vihar, which as the name suggests is a Buddhist shrine. The temple with its yellow roof is located on a hill, amidst lush green gardens.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Museum-

    The Musuem has many interesting objects such as weapons, traditional textiles/fabrics, woodcarvings and musical instruments. This is a great place for tourists because it gives them a better insight into the traditions, culture and crafts of the tribes that belong to Itanagar.

    Monuments in Manipur:

  • Kangla Fort:

    This is one of the most important sites of historical and archaeological value in the region, being identified as the site of the old palace and fortress of Manipur.
  • Temple of Brindabanchandra:

    This 19th Century structure is better known as the Temple of Bir Tikendrajit. The temple is believed to be part of Yuvraj Tikendrajit's residential complex. The site is located at the north-western part of the Kangla Fort Complex.
  • Sacred Jackfruit tree site, Kaina:

    It is believed that during the reign of Bhagyachandra Maharaj (1763-98 A.D.) the sacred idol of Shree Shree Govindaji was sculptured from the parts of a jackfruit tree cut from Kaina in complying to a dream in which the King saw the image of the Lord in certain manifestation.
  • Temple of Shri Krishna:

    The temple of Shri Krishna at Brahmapur Guru Aribam Leikai, Imphal is attributed to Maharaj Garibaniwaza and is believed to have been built in 1722 A.D.
  • Temple of Thangal General:

    The temple is attributed to Kangabam Chitananda Singh and is popularly known as Thangal General in Manipur history. Thangal General is said to have built the temple in 1879 A. D.
  • Temple of Leimapokpa Keirungba:

    The temple of Leimapokpa Keirungba, located in the compound of Manipur State Road Transport Corporation at Yaiskul.
  • Temple of Sanamahi:

    This late nineteenth century temple was built by Maharaj Kulachandra for the worship of Lord Sanamahi, an important household diety of the Meiteis. The temple is located next to the western entrance of 1st Bn. Manipur Rifles cantonment at Imphal.
  • Temple of Madan Mohonji:

    The temple of Madan Mohonji is located at Brahmpur Nahabam Leikai in Imphal, and is around 500 metres from the protected temple of Lord Krishna at Brahmapur Guru Aribam Leikai.

    • Botanical Garden:

      This temple is one of the 51 “pithasthans” in India as per Hindu mythology. This temple is also known as Kurma Pith because the shape of the temple premises resembles to that of "Kurma" namely tortoise.
    • Maharaja’s Palace:

      This is defined to be the royal palace where the ruling family is designated to live. It is a grand palace and a nice one to visit.
    • Mata Bari Temple:

      This is a famous temple which is believed to be a sacred place where the wishes once placed to the God come true. The idol of Mata Bari exists inside the temple and is worshipped with much glory and grandeur.
    • Unnakoti caves:

      Unakoti is one of the most beautiful tourist spots of Tripura. It is situated about 10 kms from Kailasahar, district Head Quarters of North Tripura and 175 kms from Agartala.
