North east India is considered to be one of the most ravishingly beautiful parts of the globe which is rich in natural resources and natural beauty. This is a very old and ethnic part of India where the globalization has not rendered a drastic change and hence it can be said that this part is still purely rich in traditions and customary native instincts with lots of temples to see and lots of Goddesses to worship.

Temples of North east India:

Assam:

  • The Kamakhya Devi temple near Guwahati in Assam is revered as one of the Shakti Peethams, and is visited by several, throughout the year.
  • The ancient Navagraha temple is located in the vicinity of Guwahati. The Navagraha Temple or the temple of the nine celestial bodies is located in the south eastern part of Guwahati in Assam, on a hill by name Citrasaala.
  • Surya Mandir: The Surya Pahar hill in the vicinity of Golapara (on the Dobapara road) in Assam is literally a art gallery of Indian sculpture. Ruins of several old temples are scattered all over the hill. This hill is also the seat of a small modern sun temple.
  • The Hayagriva temple enshrines Vishnu. Seen here are sculptures of the Dasavataras wherein Buddha is portrayed as one of the incarnations of Vishnu.
  • The ancient Negriting Shiva Temple near Golaghat was held in great regard by the Ahom rulers of Assam.
  • The Umananda Temple at Bhasmachala or the hill of ashes is said to symbolize the site where Shiva burnt Kaama the God of desire to ashes.
  • The Ashvakranta Temple is related to the legend of Krishna vanquishing the demon Narakasura.

Arunachal Pradesh:

  • Parashuram Kund: It is a very ancient pilgrimage centre in Arunachal Pradesh. it lies at a distance of 21 km frm Tezu.
  • Bomdila Monastery: This is a very old and glorious monastery at about 160m km away from Guwahati where the prime religion practiced and preached is Buddhism. It is a very sacred place for the Buddhists.
  • Tawang Monastery: it is the largest monastery in India and the second largest monastery in Asia. It has got a medieval construction.
  • Urgelling Monastery: It lies 5 kms south of Tawang Town. It is a very sacred place for the Buddhists.

Manipur:

  • Vishnu Temple, Bishanpur: The temple is situated at the Bishanpur town. It was built by the king Kyamba during 1507 AD.
  • Shri Hanuman Thakur Temple, Mahabali Forest:The temple is situated in Imphal on the bank of the Imphal river amongst the groves, Mahabali forest. It was built by king Garib Niwaj in the year of 1725 AD.
  • Thangal General Temple, Wangkhai: The temple is situated in Wangkhai locality of Imphal town. It was built by Thangal General in 1879 AD. The temple structure is raised on a distinct platform.
  • Lord Sanamahi Temples: The temple is situated in Imphal town in the first Manipur Rifle Ground. It was patronized by king Kulachandra in 1891. The structure is raised on an octagonal base. The southern side has got flying steps.
  • Shri Govindjee temple of New Palace: This is the main temple of Manipur. It enshrines the royal deity Shri Govindjee. The temple is situated near the present palace. It was built by king Churachand. The royal deities were shifted from the old Govindjee temple of Kangla palace to this temple on its completion.
  • Leimapokpam Keirungba Temple:The temple is situated in Imphal town in the compound of Manipur State Road Transport Corporation. It is donated by Leimapokpan Keirungba in 1875 AD. It is not in use now.
  • Shri Govindajee Temple of Old Palace Kangla: The temple is situated in the old Kangla palace area, now occupied by the Assam Rifles. It was built during the time of king Narasingh in 1847 AD. At present the Pakhangba, the deity connected with the royal family clan of Ningthauja is worshipped in this temple.
  • Shri Radha Raman Temple of Kanchipur: The temple is situated at Kanchipur, at the old, Langthabal place on hill ridge near the present Manipur University campus. It was dedicated by Maharaj Churachand in the year 1917 AD. It is not in use now.
  • Lord Krishna Temple of Brahmpur Leikai: The temple is situated in Imphal at Brahmpur Guru Aribam Leikai, on the banks of the Imphal River. The temple was patronized by king Charairongba and built in the year 1704 AD.

Tripura:

  • Mata Tripureswari Temple: This temple is one of the 51 pithasthans in India as per Hindu mythology. It is said that 'right foot' of Mata Sati fell at Matabari.
  • Fourteen Goddess Temple: It is located about 14 Km. away from Agartala at a place called Old Agartala. Near the sacred 14 goddess temple during the month of July every year a Kharchi festival is organised and thousands of pilgrims and devotees visit this festival.
  • Bhuveneswari Temple: The temple is constructed on a 3 feet high paved terrace.The historical significance of this temple is that it is the back-drop of the famous novel "Rajarshi" and the drama "Bisarjan" composed by Rabindranath Tagore.
