Tourist Attractions of Tripura

Tourism in Tripura is a thriving industry. The government has made special arrangements within the state to attract tourism. Some of the tourist attractions of Tripura are Agartala, Unakoti, Pilak, Udaipur, Tripurasundari Temple, Ujjayanta Palace, Neermahal, Jampui Hill, Bhavaneswari Temple, Sepahijala, Kamalasagar, Deotamura, and Dumboor Lake. The Buddhist monasteries in Agartala, Pecharthal, Kanchanpur, Manu Bakul, Pilak, and Boxnagar are also well known.

Ujjayanta Palace

Ujjayanta Palace is a Greek styled palace located at the heart of the city. The palace was previously located at the outskirts about 10 kms from the city.
A devastating earthquake in1897 destroyed it and it was later built in its present location. Built by Maharaja Radha kishore Manikaya in 1901, the palace covers a huge area and is surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens, flanked by two tanks on either side, fountains in numbers adorn the gardens and the is styled according to the Mughal Gardens. The Temple is itself an edifice of grandeur, wooden carved ceiling, tiled floors and exquisitely carved doors are some of the areas of the palace worth concentrating. It is a three storeyed castle with three spectacular domes. It cost around 10 lakh to build the palace. In the palace complex there are many temple build around. Temples of Jagannath, Kali, Lakshmi-Narayan and Uma-Maheshwari grace the area. The palace is now the Assembly House of Tripura.

Unakoti

‘Unakoti’ means one less of a crore. According to mythological legends Lord Shiva on the way to Kashi with one crore gods and goddesses including himself took shelter at this location. Shiva had asked his entourage to be awake before sunrise the next morning to resume the journey but when he found none of them awake at the right time he turned them into stones and resumed his pilgrimage. These stone images are marvelous rock carvings among beautiful green vegetation. It has murals of primitive beauty and strewn with waterfalls. The central Shiva head and gigantic Ganesha figures are the most beautiful rock cut carvings.

Pilak

Pilak is a den of beautiful Hindu and Buddhist images that dates back to the 8th and 9th centuries. Excavation of the area yielded these sculptures scattered about for 10 sq. kilometers. The various archeological findings inclusive of the images and terracotta plaques suggested the survival of both heterodox sects and creeds representing both Hinduism and Buddhism. Colossal stone images of Avolokiteshwar and Narasimha have been found here.

Tripura Sundari Temple

One of the most pious places of Hindus, Tripura Sundari Temple is one of the 51 ‘pithasthans’ in India. According to Hindu Mythology the ‘sudarshan chakra’ of Vishnu has split the dead body of Sati, Shiva’s wife when Shiva had gone berserk with rage and was on the verge of destroying the earth. It was the right foot of the goddess that fell at Matabari. Hence the temple was built and devotees flock here through out the year to offer puja.

Fourteen Goddess Temple

Located at Old Agartala about 14 Km. away from Agartala the fourteen goddess temple is situated. Every year in the month of July a Kharchi festival is organized and thousands of pilgrims and devotees visit this festival.

Jampui Hill

Jampui Hill is at an altitude of 3000 ft above sea level. The excellent climate, green vegetation and orange gardens and sunset and sunrise points are of immense tourist attraction. Mizo (Lushai tribes) and Reang tribes inhabit in the 11 villages of the hill range.

Bhuvaneswari Temple

Maharaja Govinda Manikya built the big palace, which is in ruins on the banks of river Gomati at Udaipur. The Bhuveneswari temple is situated adjacent to this palace.

Neermahal

Neermahal is a spectacular water palace built in 1930 by Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya. Built as a summer resort, it is an architectural splendor uniting both Hindu and Muslim architecture and design. It is located at a distance of about 53 km from Agartala. The beautiful palace is circumscribed with the Rudrasagar Lake covering an area of 5.3 sq. km. The migratory birds visit the lake during the winters. The well-laid gardens add beauty to the grandeur of the palace. It reflects the past glory of the kings.

Sepahijala

Covering an area of 18.532 km. with 150 species of residential birds, migratory birds and orchid garden Sepahijala is one of the hot spots of tourist attraction in Tripura. Boating facilities, wild life, botanical garden, zoo, elephant joy rides, rubber and coffee plantation attract the visitors. The famous spectacled monkey is found here too.

Trishna Wild Life Sanctuary

About 100 Km. away from Agartala in Belonia Trishna Wild Life Sanctuary is located. Bisons are found here and are the main attraction in this sanctuary. Migratory and resident birds are also found here.

Kamalasagar

In 15th century, Maharaja Dhanya Manikya discovered lake Kamalasagar in the border of Bangladesh. A famous temple of Goddess Kali is situated on the banks of Kamalasagar that dates back to the 16th century.

Deotamura

Deotamura is famous for its panels of rock carvings on the steep mountain wall on the bank of Gomati. Huge images carved of Shiva, Vishnu, Kartika, Mahisasur Mardini Durga and other gods and goddesses are found here. The images date back to 15th or 16th century and the place is also called Chabimura.

Dumboor Lake

It is a beautiful lake with ethereal charm. A water area of 41 sq.kms. embedded 48 islands it looks majestic and charming attracting migratory birds. Water sports facilities are additional attractions. The Tirthamukh, the place where the River Gomati originates has the Hydel Project. Every year14th January the famous 'Pous Sankranti Mela' takes place. The lake is the meeting point of rivers Raima and Sarma and is a rich reservoir of natural and cultured fishes.

Rudrasagar Lake

About 55 Km. away from Agartala near Melaghar Rudrasagar Lake has immense tourist attraction. Neelmahal the beautiful lake palace is built in the center of the lake. The lake attracts a large number of migratory birds every winter. Boat race is also organized in the month of July or August.
