Nameri National Park in Assam, located at the foothills of eastern Himalayas about 35km from Tezpur, encompasses an area of about 200sq. kms. Nameri was set up as a sanctuary on 18th September 1985 with an area of 137 sq km which was actually a part of Naduar Forest Reserve. Later another 75sq km was added to it making it an area of 212 sq km and on 15th November, 1998 it was officially established as a National park. Nameri National Park is a national park located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas in the Sonitpur District of Assam. Nameri National Park is the most scenic of all the national parks of Assam.

Animals:

The Nameri National
Park is the second Tiger reserve of Assam. Nameri is famous for, is the herds of elephants. The park has a high density of elephant population. The park consists of deciduous forests, hills and the river Jia Bhoroli flows through it. Nameri is a haven for many rare animals. The rich wildlife includes Tiger, Black bear, elephant, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Indian Bison, Pangolin, Indian wild dog, deer, Civet Cat, Capped Langur, Jackals etc. Various species of birds such as the endangered white winged wood duck, four species of Hornbill, butterflies and reptiles are also found here. Apart from a sizeable population of endangeredspecies like White Winged Duck, Nameri National Park boasts of the Khasi hill terrapin or the Assam reef turtle once believed to be extinct was found in Nameri in 1992. Besides these, elephants, deer, tiger, black bear, birds (over 233) and many species of orchids can be seen. The Park is also home to the mithun or Indian bison.

Activities:

Activities at the Park include wildlife viewing on elephant back and by boat and angling in the Bhorelli River with prior Government permission. Acknowledged a National Park as recent as 1998, Nameri also offers its visitors opportunities for river rafting and eco-fishing.
